FAQs

Can you tell me a little about yoga?

The physical and spiritual tradition of yoga was established in India more than 5000 years ago. Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "to yoke", yoga is the yoking or the union of the body, mind, and spirit. Red Root Yoga strives to provide classes that will harmonize these aspects of yourself and help you feel more connected with others. The focus is on complete breathing and purposeful, intentional movement to bring balance and awareness to your life.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Practitioners of yoga have reported:

Improved concentration and mental clarity

Improved flexibility , core strength, and weight maintenance

Increased body awareness

Reduced stress

Improved sleep

More positive outlook and increased sense of joy

Do I have to be very flexible to participate in yoga?

Absolutely not. While it's true that some forms of yoga incorporate more advanced postures, each person who attends a Red Root class is encouraged to practice in accordance with one's own ability, always understanding and listening to the body and its wisdom.  Furthermore, modifications and variations of postures are often offered to ensure comfort and safety.

Will I have to chant or make noise during class?

It is not required that anyone do anything with which they are uncomfortable. Some classes may begin or end with a chant to unify the group or explore intoning, but this will vary from class to class.

How long is a yoga class?

Currently, each yoga class is 75 minutes long. Some workshops may be longer in duration.

How should I dress for the yoga class?

It is best to wear clothes that allow for maximum flexibility and comfort. Sweat pants, yoga pants, and comfortable shirts work best.

Do I need to have a yoga mat for class?

A yoga mat, large towel, or small throw rug is required for class. Red Root Yoga has a limited quantity of mats available to borrow for class.

Should I eat before class?

Large meals should be eaten at least two hours before class. A light snack may be eaten an hour before class.

Should I practice yoga with an injury or recent illness?

Yoga can at times be physically demanding. It is advisable to consult a health care professional if you are uncertain that yoga may be contraindicated for your current condition. Please notify your instructor prior to class of any pre-existing conditions.

What are the studio policies?

The instructor will close the doors to the yoga space 10 minutes into class to minimize disruption.  Therefore, plan on arriving at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled class to allow time for removing your belongings, signing in, and setting up your mat and props.  If, however, you must enter the room, please do so silently and considerately.

To further optimize everyone's experience at Red Root Yoga, please follow the guidelines below:
